88% of Our Ocean’s Surface Has Plastic Debris Floating Around

I believe a common mistake people make on the topic of ocean pollution, and one of the main reasons why it is not being resolved fast is that people neglect it, or they think it’s not important NOW. And I can’t blame them, if they aren’t aware then it’s hard to care (that rhymed). The community around me, we hear about the ocean pollution, and we see the recycling bins as well as the signs that advise to not be wasteful, but we do not see signs that say 88% of the oceans surface is polluted with plastic debris, (which is true by the way). A statistic that was found by researchers from the University of Cadiz, Spain as well as the University of Western Australia.

You heard me, 88% of the oceans surface has plastic debris floating around. I cannot emphasize this enough, 88% NOW, 88% 2016! Not in 50 years, but the statistic will be a lot worse in 50 years, (true, not false). With the introduction of plastic products in the 1850’s, the what seemed hero to a cheap but strong product has been turned to the dark side.

A very important fact must be kept in mind though, the 88% statistic only claims the pollution on the ocean’s surface. The 88% only account for a teensy 1% of the total estimated amount of plastic debris in our oceans, that’s pretty bad, pretty scary.

I’ve written this blog post to give another example of how our oceans are being consumed by plastic. The amount of people that claim to not be fully aware of the truth behind ocean pollution should be very much reduced, because it won’t take 20% of the population to change for the better, it’s going to take at least 3 times that. The good thing is, there are simple steps we can take to make a large difference 🙂
